Joe Sinnott funeral details announced following death of Wexford dad in fishing tragedy

A fisherman who died after the trawler he was working on sunk will be laid to rest later this week.

Joseph 'Joe' Sinnott, 65, passed away after being taken from the water off the coast of Co Wexford by the Rescue 117 helicopter in the early hours of Sunday morning after the boat he was on sunk at Hook Head.

The dad-of-four, from Seaview in Kilmore, was later pronounced dead at University Hospital Waterford.

His death notice reads: “Beloved husband of Mary and loving father of Michael, Siobhan, Bernie and Bridget, sadly missed by his family, brother, sister, sons-in-law, daughter-in-law, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, uncles, aunts, grandchildren, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.”

A wake will be held at Mulligan's Funeral Home, the Faythe, Wexford on Monday, January 6, and Tuesday, January 7, from 3pm until 8pm.

Funeral prayers will be held on Wednesday at 11.15am followed by removal to St. Mary’s Church Kilmore for Funeral Mass at 12pm, with burial afterwards in the New Cemetery in Kilmore.

Mr Sinnott is survived by his wife Mary and four children.

Family flowers only, donations in lieu may be made to the RNLI.

Fine Gael councillor for Kilmore Jim Moore described the tragedy as “a very sad opening to the beginning of 2020”.

He said: “Everybody is a bit stunned really. You enter a new year with hope and on the first weekend you’ve got a tragedy of this nature.”

A second fisherman, Willie Whelan, 41, remains missing following the tragic incident.

Searches will be resumed today, however, bad weather is hampering the search efforts.

A Status Yellow wind warning is in place for counties Cork, Waterford and Wexford until 11am this morning.
