Joe Rothwell in Rangers transfer link as Steven Gerrard 'chasing' former Manchester United prospect

Rangers are reportedly keen on bringing in Blackburn star Joe Rothwell to boost their midfield options.

And they could pounce in the next transfer window with the English Championship side keen to cash in on one of their star assets before his contract expires next summer.

Rothwell spent his entire youth career in the Manchester United academy, enjoying loan spells at Blackpool and Barnsley before leaving Old Trafford to join Oxford.

After becoming a pivotal figure for the U's, he was snapped up by Blackburn Rovers where again he has gone on to become a key cog in the Championship side's midfield.

Now the Scottish Sun state Steven Gerrard is hoping to tempt the 26-year-old into joining him at Ibrox.

It's understood that Rangers are one of the front-runners to sign Rothwell on a pre-contract in January, with Blackburn desperate to generate some cash for the England under-20 international.

The Light Blues take on Hibernian at Ibrox this afternoon hoping to leapfrog Hearts back to the top of the Premiership table.
