Joe Root tipped to resign as England captain after Ashes humiliation

England captain Joe Root has been tipped to step down from the role after defeat in the third Ashes Test means Australia have retained the urn.

England collapsed to 68 all out on day three in Melbourne, succumbing to an innings and 14-run loss.

The defeat saw Australia go 3-0 up in the series and Root cut a forlorn figure after the game, having stood alone with the bat for England this year.

Root has ended 2021 with a total of 1,708 Test runs, the third most by anyone ever in a calendar year.

However, he has had very little support from his teammates, with England's second-highest run scorer Rory Burns a whopping 1,178 runs behind Root and extras in third place.

Following defeat at the MCG, former England bowler Jonathan Agnew told BBC Test Match Special that he would be "surprised" if Root did not resign as captain after the series.

"I would be surprised if Joe Root continues as captain," he said. "I saw a very tired figure down there just now."

Root refused to be drawn on his immediate future when asked about it, instead pledging to "make sure we end up coming away from this tour with something".

He said: "My main focus and the groups focus is on the next ball, which is the first ball of the next Test. You can't start looking at things too far in the future.

"More than anything, we've got to make sure we end up coming away from this tour with something. We do not want to be stood there 5-0 at the end of the series.

"We've got two Test matches, a lot of World Test Championship points to play for, and we have to put some pride back into the badge and give the fans that are so loyal to us back home something to shout about and enjoy."
