Joe Root hit on head by bouncer from England team-mate Stuart Broad

Joe Root was hit on the head by a Stuart Broad bouncer first ball playing for Yorkshire at Trent Bridge this morning.

England captain Root, who suffered a hand injury while fielding yesterday afternoon, required a replacement helmet and a dose of painkillers but was fine to continue as he set about trying to save the game against Nottinghamshire.

Root, who made 73 in the first innings, joined his friend Gary Ballance at the crease with Yorkshire 24 for two after Jake Ball dismissed both openers. They are chasing 447 to win but in reality the aim is to bat out the day to secure a draw.

Yorkshire were batting from the start of the day after Notts captain Steven Mullaney declared overnight — leaving new signing Joe Clarke stranded on 97, and denied a century in both innings of his Championship debut for the county. The 22-year-old right-hander, who has played for England Lions, is in the mix for a place in the senior squad to face Australia this summer.
