Joe Root breaks Michael Vaughan's record of most Test runs by an England batter in a calendar year

BRISBANE: England skipper Joe Root on Friday broke the record of former captain Michael Vaughan after smashing most Test runs by an English batter in a calendar year.

Root achieved the feat on day three of the first Ashes Test on Friday. The England captain had registered a duck in the first innings against Australia but in the second hit a classy 86 not out to surpass Vaughan.

In 2002, Vaughan had scored 1481 runs and Root came close to breaking his record when he hit 1477 in 2018. The England captain finally surpassed Vaughan on day three of the ongoing Brisbane Test.

Root and Dawid Malan (80 not out) staged England's fightback as the duo first steadied the visitors' ship and then sailed to take the total to 220/2, cutting Australia's first innings lead of 278 to just 58 runs now.

The two have so far added 159 runs for the third wicket.
