Joe Root becomes England's all-time leading run scorer across all formats

Joe Root has become England's all-time leading run scorer across all three formats of cricket during the first test against India at Trent Bridge.

Root has been a mainstay in the team since making his debut in December 2012, also against India.

The Yorkshireman needed just 23 runs in his innings on Wednesday to surpass Sir Alastair Cook for the feat as he reached 15,739 total runs.

Cook was Root's captain at the beginning of his test career before being replaced by the 30-year-old in 2017.

Behind Cook in the rankings sits Kevin Pietersen, who scored a mammoth 13,779 total runs.

Root will likely extend the record to a near impossible mark given that he still has plenty of years left in the game and performs consistently in red and white ball cricket.

Such ability in the shorter formats of the game is what sets him aside from Cook who himself enjoyed remarkable longevity in the sport.

Root is renowned for the ease and pace with which he accumulates runs, often reaching 50 without breaking sweat.

He holds the record for most consecutive Tests with half-centuries, reaching the milestone 12 times in a row between October 2016 and August 2017.

In Test matches, he has scored 8770 runs at an average of nearly 49. In One Day Internationals (ODIs) he averages over 51 and has 6109 runs with another 895 runs in Twenty20 internationals.

Root will be looking to add many more runs to that total this summer as England look to bounce back from a disappointing tour of India this winter and a series defeat against New Zealand in June.

The series against India includes five test matches, concluding at Old Trafford in September.

Root will be without good friend and England talisman Ben Stokes, who is taking a break from the game to concentrate on his mental health and further recuperate from a finger injury which has troubled him all summer.

England will hope Stokes will return in time for the Twenty20 World Cup in October in the United Arab Emirates and the subsequent Ashes series in Australia.
