Joe O'Shea column: Lisa Smith's story is a warning to young Irish people on dangers of falling for extreme ideologies

We are going to hear a lot about ISIS bride Lisa Smith over the coming weeks – Irish people can’t help but be fascinated by such a bizarre story.

We may never fully know what drove her to do what she did.

A woman leaving home to take up the cause of a bunch of genocidal goons like them is beyond the understanding of most of us.

But we can at least thank God her daughter, an innocent child who would have faced the horror of growing up in a refugee camp in the shadow of ISIS had the Government not intervened to do the right thing.

And it is the right thing to do. They are both Irish citizens. And while Lisa Smith made some unbelievably terrible choices in her life, her infant daughter is guilty of no crimes and deserves a chance at the kind of life we take for granted for all of our kids.

The UK Government earlier this year stripped the citizenship of ISIS bride Shamima Begum – who lost three children while she was in the “caliphate”.

She was 15 when she left London. Her family say she is struggling with mental health issues.

You can understand why the British, who have seen yet another senseless attack and killing on the streets of London last week would have little sympathy for her.

London is on the frontline of this crazed war on humanity by these murderous religious fanatics. But when you think of Smith and Begum you have to think of a terrible human tragedy and the fate of their children.

Smith is likely to be given the chance to explain her actions in an Irish court. Her little girl is now with her family in Co Louth and we can at least be thankful for that.

Her story should stand as a warning to young Irish people in particular of the dangers of falling for extreme ideologies of any kind.

Whether that leads to deaths in Syria or on the streets of Derry.

We live in very dangerous times. And all we can do is try to protect ourselves and make the right choices based on our laws, our humanity and the good of our children.
