Joe Newell sees Hibs red card funny side as he provides hilarious 'hatchet man' reaction

Sometimes all you can do is shake your head and laugh things off.

And that's what Joe Newell is having to do after his European debut was ended after just 29 minutes on the back of a poor refereeing decision.

The Hibs midfielder was shown a straight red card for a tackle in the first half of the 3-0 win over Santa Coloma in a bad tempered match at Easter Road.

It was such a harsh red card that even the free kick given was a bit on the soft side but it didn't stop the whistler from sending Newell off despite the protests.

But the Englishman has seen the funny side of it as he described himself as a hatchet man on social media in a post talking about how great it was to be back in front of fans.

He was gutted that it last just 29 minutes but was thrilled to see supporters back inside Easter Road after a 16 months with no supporters.

He tweeted: “Great start to the season on Thursday, some feeling playing in front of fans again. Was an amazing 29 minutes. #hatchetman”

Jack Ross' side would go on to win 3-0 in the game ahead of the second leg in Andorra with Kevin Nisbet adding to Martin Boyle's double.

The club have decided not to appeal the red card shown to Newell, so he'll stay at home and prepare for the next round with Hibs strong favourites to progress.
