It might have pained Jets legend and Hall of Fame QB Joe Namath to say it, but he admitted that Tom Brady is the greatest quarterback ever.
It takes a lot for someone like Namath, who is so wired into the Jets organization, to admit the greatness that is Brady, but he put any speculation to rest on Howard Stern’s show on Monday.
“I would have to say he’s the best at answering the challenge there ever was, yes,” Namath told Stern when asked whether Brady is the best quarterback to ever play the game. “I’ve not seen anybody have that many big games and answer the challenge as well as he has.”
A conclusion like this is not easy to come to, but Namath has never been shy about speaking his mind in the public light. His brash, bold character is what earned him the spotlight in the first place.
Namath won the Jets their one and only Super Bowl, so he knows what it takes to get to the big game. That said, Namath, like many Jets fans, has witnessed Brady raise six Lombardi Trophies while dominating Gang Green for the past 20 years in the process.
Brady has defied Father Time, leaving the Jets hoping retirement comes sooner than later. He is playing at a high level into his 40s and there is no indication that he’ll step away from the game that’s anointed him the greatest to ever do it.
While there is a conversation to be had whether you believe Brady or Joe Montana is the better quarterback, an opinion like Namath’s holds a lot of weight.
