Joe McElderry joins Clap for Carers by singing for hard-working staff at South Tyneside Hospital

X Factor winner Joe McElderry stunned staff at South Tyneside Hospital with a surprise mini-concert after Thursday's Clap for Carers.

Just like we all have for the past five weeks, loads of us raised our hands and voices in support of front line workers who are fighting the battle against coronavirus.

But Joe took his appreciation a step further by setting up a PA system outside of the hospital not far from his home in South Shields and singing for NHS staff, after he too had applauded them.

Joe hadn't announced his performance to anyone so staff were left in shock as he burst into his chart-topping debut single The Climb, a very apt choice for everything that's going on right now; before wowing everyone with a rendition of opera classic Nessun Dorma, the song he famously won Popstar To Operastar with in 2011.

The reaction to Joe's impromptu performance was huge, with staff filming him singing on their phones and then sharing the clips on social media.

One posted on Facebook and captioned their videos: "Fab morale booster," adding "he was amazing... so kind of him to sing for us, we loved it."

Another wrote: "South Tyneside hospital tonight. joe mcelderry giving us a morale boost."
