Joe Lycett storms off Steph's Packed Lunch after awkward joke and doesn't return

Joe Lycett stormed off Channel 4 show Steph's Packed Lunch on Thursday afternoon, after he didn't find the funny side to an awkward joke by Steph McGovern.

The 32-year-old comedian, who hosts the Great British Sewing Bee, was appearing alongside Simon Rimmer and Denise Van Outen but the atmosphere soon turned tense after Joe took exception to Steph's joke.

Before the show cut to an ad break, Joe was angered by Steph's comment before taking off his microphone and storming off set and out of the TV studio.

The comic then didn't return which meant that Steph had to inform viewers after the break why Joe was no longer appearing on the show.

It all went wrong after Steph and Joe had been discussing single-use plastic and how they had cut down on its use at their homes, as part of a bigger plan to help the planet.

A photo of Joe's garden then appeared on-screen and Steph jokingly pointed out that there were plastic bottles in view.

Steph was chatting with gardening expert Siobhan about how to give their gardens a makeover to look like the one at the Love Island villa.

She then said to Joe: "You’re well into this aren’t you, Joe?

"Because you’ve pimped up your garden and made it look more Love Island."

Joe replied: "Yeah, I don’t have a fire pit so I just bought a big candle."

Siobhan gave her critique as the atmosphere remained jovial: "Yeah, you could do with a bit more colour in there, you’ve got a bit of colour on the deck chair."

But that changed with Steph pointed out: "Isn’t that one of the bottles you said you’d stopped using in the picture?"

The tension could be cut with a knife as the studio fell silent before Joe hit back: "I didn’t realise I was on Newsnight, Steph.”

Steph didn't know if he was joking and as the comedian continued to frown, she said: "Alright, Joe."

Joe then pulled off his microphone panned to a wide shot which showed him walking out of the studio after putting his microphone to one side.

After thew break, Steph told viewers that Joe would not be back, saying: "Joe Lycett was going to stick with us but he’s had to leave.”

*Steph's Packed Lunch continues weekdays at 12:30pm on Channel 4.
