Joe Lycett and Piers Morgan mock Liz Truss after she quits as Prime Minister

Joe Lycett and Piers Morgan are among those not sorry to see Liz Truss leave 10 Downing Street. Former Good Morning Britain presenter Morgan was among the first to respond to the Prime Minister's resignation, brutally mocking her short reign after previously telling his 7.9million social media followers how she had turned the UK into a "laughing stock".

According to articles in the Mirror online, comedian Joe Lycett, who famously parodied the Conservative party line during his notorious appearance on Laura Kuenssberg's Sunday show a few weeks ago, provided a hilarious response to the resignation, with other stars chiming in with their views, too.

Lycett sarcastically tweeted Truss directly, writing: "@trussliz omg just heard there’s a leadership election nxt week????? u shud run babe youd be perfect!!!" It followed the chaos of his participation in Kuenssberg's new BBC show, pretending to be far right-wing in a straight-faced ruse.

He said: "You said earlier I’m not left or right. I know there's been criticism in the Mail on Sunday today about lefty liberal wokie comedians on the BBC." With a straight-face, he announced: "I’m actually very right wing and I love it."

Attempting to get him to drop his persona, Kuenssberg suggested that Truss had "a big package of help coming this week to help people pay their bills." Lycett responded: "Yeah, she was very clear what she said. I think you know exactly what's going to happen. I’m reassured, you’re reassured." Turning to fellow guest, Labour's Emily Thornberry, who was smirking at the joke he asked: "Are you reassured?"

His sarcastic display on Thursday racked in almost 2,000 retweets in under 15 minutes, with users commenting on how he would make a better prime minister. One user said: "I couldn't love you any more than I do now."

Another added: "Thoughts and prayers for you, Joe, during this hard time." A third said: "Love this! But to be fair, Joe, you'd be much better," and one more stated: "Please don't say that, someone might read it to her and she will think it's compulsory."

After his Sunday appearance on Kuenssberg's show, he claimed he left Truss with a "face like a slapped a**e". Earlier in that show, while watching the BBC journalist interview her live in the studio, Lycett could be heard shouting off-screen: "You smashed it, Liz!"

Later, he appeared on Jeremy Vine's Channel 5 show to answer accusations that he had been "mocking" Truss. He told Vine: "They say I am mocking Liz Truss, which is the complete opposite of what I'm doing. I'm a huge Liz Truss fan."

"She is the absolute best we're capable of. She's Thatcher 2.0. I'm nostalgic for Thatcher, I loved Thatcher — she got rid of those wokey miners, didn't she?

"Good job, Margaret! I'm thrilled to have Liz as PM. It's going to be a great time for this country and she is going to fix it!" When asked if there should be jokes at such a serious time, he insisted: "I am very sincere."

Truss, who previously stated she hated comparisons to Mrs Thatcher, defeated former Chancellor Rishi Sunak in September, with 57 per cent of the vote to his 43 per cent.

When speaking about his thoughts on the Tory government, Lycett told the BBC politics show: "I think the haters will say we’ve had 12 years of the Tories, and that we're sort of at the dregs of what they've got available, and that Liz Truss is sort of like the backwash of the available MPs.

"I wouldn’t say that, because I'm incredibly right wing, but some people might say that." Unimpressed Kuenssberg asked him to be "serious", but the comic replied: "I’m not being sarcastic."

Outside No 10 Downing Street on Thursday afternoon, Truss said she could not deliver the mandate she was elected on by Tory members and had told King Charles she was resigning. She said she would remain Prime Minister until a successor was chosen.

Just hours earlier, Morgan had urged her to step down, writing on Twitter: "You’re making Britain an absolute laughing stock @trussliz — put your country before your pathetic attempt at self-preservation, and resign."

Following the resignation, he then declared: "It’s over. Liz Truss is resigning and will become shortest-serving Prime Minister in British history. What an absolute shambles."

Ian Watkins — the singer "H" from Steps — was similarly brutal, tweeting "******* GO! Take the hint! #GeneralElectionNow" earlier today. He called for a general election, with left-wing journalist and political commentator Owen Jones declaring: "H speaks for the nation!!!"

Love Island's 2019 winner Amber Gill referred to the Daily Star's publicity stunt monitoring a lettuce to see if it would last longer than Truss's time in power. She tweeted: "There is no way I would have resigned before a lettuce. Elect the lettuce at this point."

The Irish pop duo Jedward, who often share their political views on social media, demanded a general election, stating: "After 12 years of Tory ******* the people deserve a general election!"
