Joe Ledley sets Celtic record straight as he responds to chairman's transfer claim

Joe Ledley has disputed a claim Cardiff City wanted to make him their highest paid player before he joined Celtic.

The midfielder moved to Parkhead in 2010 after his contract with the Welsh side expired, despite their best efforts to keep him.

Former Cardiff chairman Steve Borley insists he was willing to break the bank for Ledley but that the player's agent was "hell bent" on getting him to Celtic.

Borley wrote on Twitter: "I did my best to persuade Joe to stay and club to offer him a deal which at the time would have made him highest paid player but we had a new CEO who did not understand the transfer rules and an agent who was hell bent on moving him to Celtic.

"Stoke were very keen as well."

But Ledley was quick to dispute that version of events.

He replied: "Steve I remember the meeting well.I was never going to be the highest paid player.

"I respected you - as you were the only person to discuss any promised ‘contract’."

Ledley went on to spend three successful years at Celtic, amassing three league titles and a Scottish Cup.

A fan took the chance to ask the 33-year-old, now at Newcastle Jets in Australia, if he was glad he ended up in Glasgow.

And the Welshman replied: "Best decision of my life. I loved every minute of it."
