Joe Kernan believes offensive mark will bring back something football has lost

Joe Kernan reckons that the introduction of the offensive mark will bring back something Gaelic Football has lost.

The All-Ireland winning Armagh and Crossmaglen manager has launched a defence of the new rule, introduced at Special Congress last week, believing it will reignite 'traditional football'.

"I think the mark is good," Kernan declared.

"I think the mark inside will give every team a lift, because it means you’ll have fielders in there and more chances of scoring, and hopefully not as many behind the ball.

"The way the game had gone, we had lost out on catching and scoring forwards and a fast game. While there was a lot of energy and fitness levels very high, there was a lot of men behind the ball with nobody up front.

"This way might even see us go back to even a bit more traditional football, and the way we were with catch and kick. That means you have to have men inside that 21.

"When a man wins the ball, he can not only take the mark – he can take a man on too and go for the jugular and go for goal.

"We have seen boys like Kevin McManamon over the years that are able to do that. I think it will bring another plus to the game that we seem to have lost".

Kernan admitted that he's undecided on how a tier two football championship will go down next summer, but pointed the finger at the GAA and media to give it a fair crack of the whip.

Kernan added: "Well if the GAA is giving the commitment to do it, they have to back it up and give it decent coverage.

"Hopefully the media and Sky and RTÉ and whoever is going to show this, and the written press don’t leave it was a wee thing down in the corner. They have to get a fair crack of the whip, so hopefully everybody will take it on board".
