Joe Hart in touching Celtic icon tribute as he shows John Thomson legacy respect with one off kit

Celtic goalkeeper Joe Hart paid tribute to John Thomson to mark 90 years since his tragic passing.

On September 5 1931 Thomson sadly lost his life aged just 22 following a collision during a match against Rangers at Ibrox.

The stopper died later in hospital having never regained consciousness after the incident.

Thomson remains renowned by the Celtic support and England cap Hart showed his respects ahead of the win over Ross County.

In the first game following 90 years since the anniversary of Thomson's passing, Hart wore a specially made kit with the Parkhead icons name and 90 emblazoned on the back during the warm-up.

Several tributes have been organised including a special three day pilgrimage culminating in the annual memorial ceremony at Thomson's graveside.

Jim Craig said of Thomson ahead of the pilgrimage: “He started off his career and made the Celtic team quite young.

"They then went on tour in 1931 to North America, and when he came back, the first derby game of the new season is when there was the tragic accident that cost him his life.

“Accidents on the football field are common, but not tragic, and that was one of the very few in Scottish football.”

“His photograph is still down in the entrance hall at Celtic Park and that shows you that when you think of all the Celtic players there have been, the fact that his photograph is there means that he was someone very, very special.”
