Joe Gomez takes 'big step' as Jurgen Klopp gives four Liverpool injury updates

Jurgen Klopp believes Liverpool defender Joe Gomez has taken "a big step" in his recovery from his serious knee problem.

And the Reds boss has revealed Gomez's fellow long-term absentees Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Jordan Henderson are all making good progress from their respective injuries.

Gomez hasn't featured since November having damaged a tendon in his left knee during a training session with England.

The centre-back has in recent weeks posted regular updates on social media detailing his ongoing rehabilitation.

And while Gomez is expected to sit out the remainder of the campaign, Klopp has been encouraged by the 23-year-old's progress.

"Joe is outside running now and all these kind of things," said Reds boss. "It's obviously a big step after all injuries.

"He looks fine when he is running and has no real reaction in the knee.

"These kind of things are very important.

"It still takes time, but he is in a good way, like Virg and Joel and Hendo. These are our long-term injured."

Van Dijk, who suffered cruciate ligament damage in October, and Matip, who injured ankle ligaments in January, are also anticipated not to play again until next season.

But Liverpool remain confident Henderson can play some part during the closing weeks of the campaign as he recovers from a groin complaint.

The Reds are next in action at Leeds United on Monday in the Premier League, with Klopp having confirmed a clean bill of health following Wednesday's Champions League exit to Real Madrid.

"No new concerns," he said. "I thought because I usually have something... but no. No new ones!"
