Joe Gomez in 'good place' but Jurgen Klopp admits Liverpool defender unlikely to return this season

Jurgen Klopp admits he would be "surprised" if Joe Gomez plays again this season as he issued an update on the fitness of the Liverpool defender.

Gomez has been absent since undergoing surgery in November to repair the ruptured patella tendon he suffered while training with England.

Liverpool recently released images and video of the 23-year-old working on his rehabilitation in the gym at the club's training centre at Kirkby.

But Klopp anticipates it will be next season before the centre-back is once again in contention for the first team.

“Joe Gomez is actually in a pretty good place, but far away from being back," said the Reds boss.

"So he walks round looks completely normal, but is not yet out on the pitch running. It was just a really tough injury as well.

“Will he be available this season? When does the season end, May? It will be close at least, I would say.

"I don’t expect (it) - and I would be positively surprised if he would be back this season, to be honest."
