Joe Gomez hits back at England fans who booed Liverpool team-mate Virgil van Dijk

Joe Gomez said he was baffled by England supporters booing Virgil van Dijk during his side's 3-1 loss to the Netherlands in the Nations League semi-final.

Yet another dominant display from van Dijk inspired his side to victory and he did not appear to be the most popular figure amongst the England faithful, with jeers accompanying his every touch on the pitch.

It was a disappointing evening for Three Lions fans, who saw their team go 1-0 up through a Marcus Rashford penalty before a Matthijs de Ligt equaliser, an own goal from Kyle Walker and a Quincy Promes strike ended their hopes of a first trophy since 1966.

And they appeared to take their frustrations out on van Dijk, who received a barrage of abuse despite lighting up the Premier League with his defensive prowess all season.

Gomez, who was an unused substitute in the game, said he was surprised by the response to the PFA Players' Player of the Year, and questioned the necessity of the fans' actions.

Gomez said: “I don't know where it was coming from. I hadn't see him do anything wrong. It doesn't pose much benefit for us as a team.

“We get on the ball and play the same way. I don't see the relevance with it. Maybe they were just following on. I don't think it affected us or the way we play as a team.”

The 22-year-old enjoyed a good start to the season for Liverpool before suffering a fractured leg in December following a tackle by Burnley defender Ben Mee.

He underwent surgery in February and came on as a substitute during Liverpool's Champions League final win over Tottenham Hotspur.

Gomez, who has won six caps for his country, is expected to start in England's third-place playoff against Switzerland on Saturday.
