Joe Gomez explains why Liverpool are still "underdogs" despite Champions League win

Joe Gomez insists Liverpool still regard themselves as "underdogs" despite their Premier League near-miss and Champions League glory.

The Reds missed out of the Premier League title to Manchester City by a single point last season, as they came close to ending their 29-year league hoodoo.

They made up for it by beating Tottenham 2-0 at the Wanda Metropolitano, to celebrate their sixth European Cup crown.

Jurgen Klopp's men opened their new campaign with a stunning 4-1 victory over Norwich on Friday night - with Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Divock Origi all getting on the scoresheet.

But despite now being the "team to beat" in the Premier League and on the continent, Gomez has revealed the Merseyside club don't quite see it like that.

“Obviously it's a label that's given now that we achieved what we did last season," Gomez told Liverpoolfc.com.

"I think the main thing in our minds is that we still see ourselves as underdogs, we still see ourselves as a hungry team that hasn't achieved what we want to achieve yet.

“There's still so much more to do and to surpass what we did last season. I think the main thing is that our mindset is in the right place and whatever is said after that is not up to us.”

Liverpool will face Europa League victors Chelsea for the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday evening.

And centre back Gomez insists the Reds will be going all out for the trophy at the Vodafone Park in Istanbul.

“Playing in finals and for silverware is what you aim for throughout the whole season,” Gomez said.

“To have the opportunity is obviously what we want to be here for. It's [the start of the campaign] a bit more strenuous than usual, but it's why we're here and it's our aim. We're all enjoying it and soaking it up.”
