Joe Gomez 'devastated' by boos from England fans after Raheem Sterling incident

Joe Gomez was reportedly left 'devastated' after being booed during England's win over Montenegro.

Liverpool defender Gomez was jeered as he made his way onto the pitch in the 7-0 victory at Wembley, seemingly for his part in his bust-up with Raheem Sterling.

Sterling took all responsibility for the clash and was dropped for the routine win, with England boss Gareth Southgate insisting Gomez had done nothing wrong.

The Telegraph reports Gomez first heard the boos as he warmed up on the touchline and was upset by his reception when he came on.

England boss Southgate condemned the jeers and is believed to have spent time with the player and his family at full-time to check on his well-being

Chris Powell, who worked with Gomez at Charlton, also rallied round him.

Speaking at full-time, Southgate said: ""Joe had done nothing wrong.

"No England player should be booed when they wear the shirt. We're a team. I don't understand that.

"Him and Raheem are very close, and the team are very close, so we don't want to see anyone treated in that way. All of the players are particularly disappointed with that.

“I’m hugely disappointed for him, but he’s got the support of all of us - the whole dressing room, totally united. And we’ll make sure we’re there for him."

Sterling was also forced to take to social media to express his disappointment.

"To all the England fans, I wanted to leave things at it was but tonight I have to speak again: it was hard for me to see my team mate get booed for something that was my fault," he wrote on social media.

"Joe hasn’t done anything wrong & for me to see someone who keeps his head down and work hard..especially after a difficult week for him to be booed when he came on tonight was wrong.

"I’ve taken full responsibility and accepted the consequence. I felt as though I had to say this get home safe every one."
