Joe Gelhardt earns maiden England U21s call-up after Leeds United star promoted from U20s squad

Joe Gelhardt has been called up to the England Under 21s squad ahead of their European Championship qualifiers against Slovenia and Andorra.

The Leeds United forward was previously selected for the Under 20s camp, but has been moved up into Lee Carsley's squad for successive away matches.

PSV winger Noni Madueke and Levi Samuels Colwill of Huddersfield Town had to pull out due to injuries, which opened up the opportunity for Gelhardt and Stuttgart's Clinton Mola to replace them.

He is set to join Leeds teammate Charlie Cresswell at St George's Park with the Under 21s before they make the trip to Celje later this week.

Sam Greenwood, Lewis Bate and Cody Drameh all remain with Andy Edwards' side for the Three Lions' clash with Italy at Chesterfield's Technique Stadium on Thursday.

This is a special moment for Gelhardt, who has appeared for England at many different younger age groups but is quickly flying through the ranks.

The 19-year-old has a prolific record for his country, netting 12 goals in 15 appearances for the Under 17s whilst also scoring at the European Championship in a 3-1 win over Sweden.

Having impressed at that level, Gelhardt appeared for the Under 18s in September 2019 and went on to net four times in six matches.

In September, he made his debut for the Under 20s, scoring a hat-trick in a 6-1 victory over Romania and has had a remarkable rise in club football, too.

Gelhardt came through the academy at Wigan Athletic and was given a consistent run in the team during the 2019/20 season, netting once in 19 matches.

His form earned him a move to Leeds in summer 2020 following their promotion to the top-flight, but Gelhardt has had to be patient for first-team opportunities.

He featured heavily for the club's under-23s side last term and was their second top scorer as won the Premier League 2 Division 2 title.

However, Gelhardt was rewarded for his form with the youth set-up by Marcelo Bielsa when he made his first-team debut in the Carabao Cup win at Fulham.

Whilst also stepping up and scoring in the penalty shootout, he showed moments of class and signs that he could become one of Leeds' next big academy graduates.
