Joe Flacco ‘throwing dimes’ at Broncos practice

Broncos quarterback Joe Flacco made his orange and blue debut against the Seahawks last week, leading the first-team offense for one drive. Flacco helped Denver move down the field before the offense stalled and had to settle for a field goal.

Flacco finished the game 3-of-4 for 19 yards. Nothing flashy and nothing alarming, a quiet preseason debut. Flacco has been flashy at training camp, according to wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders.

“Yesterday, he threw some dimes,” Sanders said after practice Tuesday. “He threw some dimes. He’s been throwing dimes. Today he threw me a couple of dimes and Drew [Lock] threw me a dime as well. So, the chemistry is coming. Everything is looking good.

“It’s all about just going out and just trying to master this offense so when Monday night comes around, we are putting up points. And we’re linking up on deep and trying to create explosive plays because that’s what it’s about.”

Flacco never put up big numbers during his time with the Ravens and he was labeled by some as a “Dink and Dunk” quarterback. Sanders doesn’t think that nickname is appropriate for Denver’s new QB.

“It’s not about the ‘Dink and Dunk,'” Sanders said. “It’s about those explosion chunk plays — that’s what I know I have to bring to the table.”

Sanders rushed 35 yards for a score, threw a 28-yard touchdown pass and caught a 64-yard touchdown pass in 2018 — he knows a thing or two about explosive plays. If Flacco’s arm is as strong as Sanders says it is, the receiver should expect to make more big plays in 2019.
