The Denver Broncos traded a mid-round draft pick to the Baltimore Ravens in exchange for quarterback Joe Flacco in March but that may not necessarily mean the team will pass on QBs in the NFL draft.
Flacco is 34 years old and the Broncos may try to select a quarterback of the future in next week’s draft, perhaps as early as 10th overall. Flacco doesn’t seem too worried about that potential possibility.
“It is what it is,” Flacco said on Apri 16. “I want to get this team to be the best it is with me at the quarterback position. Obviously, that is not of most importance to draft a quarterback.
“But if we do, that’s completely out of my control. I’m going to go out here and I’m going to compete and he’s going to have to come out here and be on the field with me every day, too. I’m all ready for that.”
Flacco seemed to imply that even if the team selects a QB early in the draft, he will remain the understood starter.
“I don’t really care about whether they take a quarterback or not,” Flacco said. “Whether it’s 10 or whatnot, the only thing I care about is, like I said, I want this team to be as good as they can with me at quarterback.
“If we feel like as a team and an organization that we can add value to our team at the 10th pick, then I’m all for getting a guy that can add value to the team with me as the understood quarterback. At the end of the day, it is what it is.”
Flacco spent the first 11 years of his career in Baltimore. He has completed 61.7 percent of his passes for 38,245 yards and 212 touchdowns with 136 interceptions in his career.
Notable QBs in this year’s class include Kyler Murray, Dwayne Haskins and Drew Lock. All three of those QBs visited the team’s facility this spring.
