Joe Duffy fans send touching condolences after death of RTE broadcaster’s beloved mother

Fans of Joe Duffy have rallied round, offering their support and sending touching condolences, following the death of the RTE broadcaster’s beloved mother.

The Liveline host has been left heartbroken after his mother Mabel Duffy died on Sunday in a nursing home in Co Dublin.

Joe’s agency, NK Management, announced the news on his behalf, saying the 92-year-old died “surrounded by her loving family”.

Mabel is being remembered as “an absolute lady” who was “great spirited” and “much respected by all who knew her”.

Her death notice posted on RIP.ie reads: “Duffy, Mabel (92) (nee Murphy) February 20th 2022- (Claddagh Green Ballyfermot) peacefully in Kiltipper Woods Care Centre Home, surrounded by her loving family.

“Mabel, beloved wife to the late Jimmy, cherished mother of James, Joseph, Peter, Brendan and Pauline, predeceased by her youngest son Aidan (25). Sadly, missed by her loving family, sisters Monica and Patsy, In-laws, Bernard, Stephen and Marie, nieces, nephews, friends and neighbours. Grandmother to Wayne, Geoffrey, Ciara, Ian, Emma, Darragh, Seana, Conor, Ellen, Seán, Ronan and her great-grandchildren.”

Condolences for the Duffy family have been rolling in from friends, as well as fans of Joe and his RTE colleagues.

“Sincere condolence to the Duffy family on the very sad passing of their dear Mother Mabel she was a lovely lady may she RIP in the arms of the angels in heaven,” one person wrote.

Another added: “Our deepest sympathy to the Duffy family. We really felt as if we knew your Mum Joe. You always talked about her with love and fondness on your radio show. May Mabel rest in peace.”

“To Joe and all the family, so sorry for your loss. My condolences to you all at this very difficult time. You spoke very fondly of your dear Mam Mabel on your radio show. May she rest in peace,” a third posted.

“Joe thoughts of love and prayers for comfort to you and all the family. We know your Mam Mabel was a central pillar of support and sense, of love and laughter and of compassion and kindness to all of you in her circle of love. Her legacy will be long felt. God bless you all,” another said.

Many tributes are being posted by RTE Liveline listeners, who “felt like they knew Mabel” through listening to Joe lovingly speak about her often on his radio show.

Mabel’s funeral will take place in St. Matthew's Church, Ballyfermot on Wednesday at 11.30pm followed by burial in Palmerstown Cemetery. The mass will also be streamed live online via the parish’s website.
