Joe Duffy claims RTE will have to make him retire if they want him to quit

Joe Duffy has said RTE will have to make him retire if they want him to quit.

The veteran broadcaster, 63. revealed he has no plans to leave his role on RTE Radio One.

He told the Irish Daily Star: "I will be retired by somebody but it won't be by me.

"I love working. RTE can decide tomorrow 'good luck Joe', but I love my work.

"Every day is different. At the beginning of Liveline, you have a fair idea where it is going to start, but you've no idea where it's going to end."

There are concerns the radio legend could be forced to vacate his post after Marian Richardson bid an emotional farewell to listeners in March as she left RTE after 40 years with the station.

Marian presented a number of shows across her four decades with the broadcaster, and bowed out on Playback on RTE Radio 1 after nine years at the helm.

However earlier this year fellow RTE star Marty Whelan was also quick to shut down any talk of retirement, regardless of age.

Marty told the RTÉ Guide: “It would be awful for someone to be doing what you’re doing on a Thursday, and then on Friday you can’t because you’ve turned 65. It’s ridiculous. I couldn’t possibly deal with that.

“It’s who I am, and I think if you love something that much, it keeps you alive, focused and keeps the head going.
