Joe Denly to miss first T20 against New Zealand after rolling his ankle in training

England suffered a pre series blow when Joe Denly was ruled out of the opening T20 clash after injuring his right ankle at the end of training in Christchurch.

Denly was set to play in the game before he twisted his ankle on the boundary at Hagley Park attempting to take a catch in the deep.

The Kent batting all rounder was left sporting a surgical boot and will be reassessed by medics as to his future availability over the weekend.

Denly had found some form in the second warm up game with 39 not out, but his place could now go to either Lewis Gregory or Tom Banton in a batting order reshuffle, providing the third debutant in the game.

Skipper Eoin Morgan had already confirmed that all rounder Sam Curran and 21-year-old pace bowler Pat Brown would be making their T20 debuts in the first of five matches.

And Morgan is looking forward to finding out more about Brown who has been crucial to Worcestershire's success in T20 cricket over the past two years.

Morgan said: “For a young guy, leading the attack at Worcestershire, he has taken that on with great responsibility and great clarity.

“His skill level is up to scratch and since he arrived he has impressed as an athlete and modern day cricketer.

“He can do pretty much anything and with the ball his variations are his strengths and we'll see more of him in the game.
