Joe Cole pinpoints the key difference between Chelsea's exciting youngsters and the crop of 2010

Former Chelsea star Joe Cole has drawn comparisons between the Blues' current crop of exciting young players and those who were at the club in 2010.

The Blues have been heavily praised for playing the likes of Fikayo Tomori, Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount this season.

While Frank Lampard's hands have been tied to a certain extent with Chelsea's transfer ban, the youngsters have revelled with increased responsibility this term.

Abraham has scored nine goals in 11 appearances in all competitions, while Mount has established himself as a first-choice option in an attacking midfield role.

Tomori, in turn, earned his first England call-up in the most recent qualifiers, while Callum Hudson-Odoi has impressed since returning from injury.

Cole has explained the difference between Chelsea's current crop and the group they had in 2010.

The likes of Gael Kakuta, Jeffery Bruma and Josh McEachran were three examples of young players trying to force their way through at Stamford Bridge.

That never materialised though, with all three players moving on to new clubs after years of loan moves that failed to see them break into the Chelsea first team.

"Around 10 years ago, in 2010, Chelsea had a big push on young players," Cole told BT Sport.

"Your Brumas, Kakutas and that weren't ready for it but this group are.

"It's taken that long before they've found a group where they've thought 'yes' and feel comfortable putting them in.

"Credit to the boys, they're ready and they're doing it."

All four young English stars are in the Chelsea team to play Ajax, with three points on offer that could lift the Blues to the top of Group H in the Champions League.
