Joe Cole pinpoints the exact moment he knew Jose Mourinho would be special for Chelsea

Jose Mourinho is making another trip back to Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon, but is doing so for the first time as manager of Tottenham.

The former Chelsea boss arrived in London in 2004, taking the Blues to a historic title in his first season, and successfully defended the trophy the following year.

One of the standout players during his first spell with the club was Joe Cole, who discussed the impact Mourinho made in London, and how he got his players onside immediately.

"Yeah, [I knew he'd be special]," Cole told BT Sport. "Some people have got a charisma when they walk into the room.

"And you have to remember, for us he was a young manager, no background in playing. Yes, he'd just won the Champions League, so that held a massive amount of weight.

"He'd come to meet the English players at the Lowry Hotel in Manchester - we were playing for England in Manchester - and he just sat us down and basically just said: 'Listen, youse are all good players - top players - but you've won nothing. If you follow me, we are gonna win the title.'

"You're just like: 'Wow, the confidence of this man - he is strutting into this place.' But that was him."

Cole says that the year after winning the title for the first time, Chelsea became the best team he has been a part of, with the likes of John Terry, Didier Drogba and the Blues' current manager Frank Lampard all nearing the peak of their careers.

"[The 2005/06 team] was probably the best team I played in. In terms of youth, vibrancy...we'd already won the previous year so we had that swagger about us going onto the pitch.

"But I just felt like playing in this team was such a privilege, because not only could we play and really pop it about, but we could mix it as well.

"And the players, I felt a lot of them were close to their peak or at their peak. The balance of the squad was great, and it was a group of lads that I really enjoyed spending time off the pitch with as well. We had a cracking time."
