Joe Cole makes Frank Lampard and Jurgen Klopp comparison after Chelsea help Liverpool win title

Former Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole has compared Frank Lampard to Jurgen Klopp after Chelsea’s 2-1 victory against Manchester City handed Liverpool an inaugural Premier League title.

Lampard's side secured victory to strengthen their own hopes of finishing in the top four courtesy of goals from Christian Pulisic and Willian, with Klopp's side crowned champions as a result.

With City facing a potential ban from European competition next season and awaiting a verdict, Chelsea have been tipped as one of the sides who could compete with Liverpool for next season's Premier League title. The signings of both Timo Werner, who was heavily linked with a move to Liverpool, and Hakim Ziyech have raised expectations ahead of Lampard's second season at the club.

And Cole believes there are parallels between Lampard and the Reds boss while suggesting he believes the Blues have a chance to push Klopp's side in 2020/21.

The BT Sport pundit praised the maturity demonstrated by Lampard’s young squad and has backed Lampard to push his players to reach Liverpool’s level.

"I think Frank is very similar to Jurgen in his relentlessness, in his pursuit of excellence, he’s pushing that Chelsea team," Cole said on Premier League Tonight on BT Sport.

"I think the performance tonight showed a lot of maturity because when you play against Man City you have to keep it tight. There was no space for them to operate. De Bruyne wasn’t the De Bruyne of three or four days ago when he ran riot.

"So Chelsea defended fantastically well, they soaked it up and they did have the better chances.

"Frank, how we know him, he’ll be delighted with his team, delighted with his performance, but he’ll be pushing on. He’ll be driving them young players, right, we want to finish third, we want to win the FA Cup and then next year we want to be where Liverpool are tonight.”
