Joe Cole demands Gareth Southgate makes four England changes for Wales World Cup clash

Joe Cole has called for Gareth Southgate to make four changes for England's clash with Wales, including dropping captain Harry Kane.

The Three Lions played out a tepid goalless draw in their second group game against United States on Friday night. It was a result that all but sealed their place in the knockout stages, with only a defeat by four goals or more seeing them head home from the World Cup.

The drop in performance level against United States was a surprise, following the dominant win over Iran. Former England international Cole believes that Southgate needs to make a raft of changes to ensure a smooth progression to the last 16.

Cole would keep Jordan Pickford in goal and continue to select a back four in defence. The former Chelsea playmaker hailed Harry Maguire in particular for his performances so far, but hinted he would make several changes further forward.

"I think he [Southgate] has to get the right blend between resting players and also going and getting a result to take into the last 16. I know we can still go out if Wales beat us 4-0 and you have to respect that football can throw up strange results," Cole told ITV.

"But England I feel will go through and it's how they want to go through. I think Gareth needs to bring players in, get them involved in the tournament, I mean this is the team that I would pick.

"I'd stick with the back four, I wrestled with the idea of getting Kyle Walker back in and getting him up and running. But I thought that was a real positive in the last game.

"I thought the back four and the goalie and Harry Maguire in particular, I thought was fantastic, a lot of pressure on his shoulders."

But ahead of the defence, Cole has demanded a drastic shake-up, with four changes in midfield and attack. The first change comes in central midfield, with Cole surprisingly calling for Jude Bellingham to be dropped in favour of Jordan Henderson.

Bellingham starred in the win over Iran but was substituted off against United States for Henderson. There is also a much-changed attacking line-up, with Kane dropped having failed to score in either game so far and Marcus Rashford instead starting up front.

Behind the Manchester United attacker would be Jack Grealish, Phil Foden and Bukayo Saka. And Cole believes that it is time that Kane was rested, having struggled in front of goal so far this tournament.

"He's going to be key of course and I love Harry Kane and if we are to win this World Cup, he's going to have to be on it. But he had the ankle knock in the first game and I just think he's a mature player now," he added.

"He's England captain, he's a leader, come out, it doesn't matter who scores the goals. Play Marcus Rashford, get him involved. Bring Jack in off the left, I thought he done well, he can hold onto the ball for us.

"And I think having Henderson in as well, you can take the onus off of Bellingham and [Mason] Mount, change your shape. It's a big shout for the media and it's always the story."
