Joe Canning praised for 'Phenomenal' Laochra Gael episode

Joe Canning was the first person featured on the new season of TG4's Laochra Gael, and it's fair to say that viewers thoroughly enjoyed the programme.

The legendary Galway hurler burst onto the scene in the early noughties and was one of the most highly promising teenagers the game of hurling has ever seen.

As a senior, Canning was Galway's star man for the guts of a decade and the led the Tribesmen to All-Ireland glory in 2017 and ended a 29-year-drought.

During an enthralling hour of television, Canning spoke of his beginnings in the game and how he dealt with the pressure at the being the great hope of Galway.

Heartbreaking defeats to Kilkenny in finals in 2012 and 2015 were also covered in great detail. On the 2012 final, Canning recounted a comment he made in an interview about Henry Shefflin's sportsmanship.

Kilkenny were furious and used that anger as motivation to win the replayed final. Remarkably, Canning revealed that he was actually sent a letter by Kilkenny GAA during the furore, but that his parents destroyed the letter before he ever got to read it.

Another startling revelation was that Canning opposed the players that voted to get Anthony Cunningham to step down as manager after the 2015 final, saying 'it wasn't the right thing to do.'

Canning also reflected on his amazing winning point in the 2017 semi-final against Tipperary.

And of course, the crescendo of the programme detailed the 2017 All-Ireland final. On that day, Canning scored nine points as Galway beat Waterford and ended 29 years of hurt.

Once the show had finished, many fans took to Twitter to praise Canning for his appearance on the show. Here's what some viewers had to say.

"Have to say Laochra Gael programme about Joe Canning on @TG4TV is absolutely brilliant.

"To see what Joe Canning was winning at senior level and playing like from such a young age. Phenomenal player"

"Joe Canning, the greatest boy wonder of all time"

"You just have to love Joe Canning, one of the best hurlers ever and yet so humble"

"Joe Canning: Another classic from TG4."

"I'm by no means a hurling expert but that Joe Canning point against Tipp is one of the greatest scores of all time. Absolute magic."
