Joe Canning hailed by Wexford manager Davy Fitzgerald after incredible performance against Limerick

Davy Fitzgerald has described Joe Canning as one of the best forwards he has ever seen.

The Wexford manager hailed the Galway star after Canning was hospitalised with concussion following Sunday's All-Ireland semi-final.

Speaking on The Sunday Game on RTE, Fitzgerald said: "One of the best forwards I've ever come across. His skill level is one thing, his running, his tackling, just even his leadership on the pitch is incredible.

"He has a pair of hands that are gold, he can do anything with them. I just wish tonight that Joe makes a speedy recovery, gets back playing again because there's only one Joe Canning and we'd love to see him back again and well again."

Galway ace Canning scored twelve points, including four sideline cuts, in yesterday's game, but was stretchered off following a nasty collision with a teammate.

Limerick's Aaron Gillane also picked up a back injury in the match. He was kept in hospital on Sunday night, while Canning was released.

Speaking after the game, Limerick manager John Kiely said: "We sincerely hope Joe is OK and will be back on his feet very shortly, but I was glad of the break for some of our guys at the time because they were under pressure."

Galway also lost key man Cathal Mannion through injury early in the game and their boss Shane O'Neill said after the game: "Cathal was a loss, yeah, but when you look at the substitutes, they were fantastic when they came on, every single one of them.

"The 15 today, the five, the other six who didn't get the gametime today and the boys at home, we've just been immensely proud of everything they've done over the last month or two, really.

"They've just been unbelievable for us and they've done Galway so proud".
