Joe Burrow eyes first showdown vs. Steelers after Bengals’ bye

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow is getting closer to his first game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Burrow’s Bengals rest on a bye this week before the Week 9 showdown in Pittsburgh. But in exit interviews, before the players got a week off, rest assured the No. 1 pick cast a glance in the Steelers’ direction.

Burrow said the following, according to Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com:

“A much-needed bye week, by the way. Injury-wise, body-wise — everyone just needs to get their mind right. We have a chance to rattle off a lot of wins in the last part of the season. It starts in Pittsburgh (Nov. 15). That’s going to be a big game, and I’m excited to play in that one. But I’m going to enjoy this bye week first.”

Of course, Burrow also said he’ll be enjoying games like Call of Duty during his downtime.

But it’s funny Burrow knows what’s coming up and that his post-bye opponent isn’t just any adversary. It’s the currently 7-0 Steelers (which will probably be 8-0 after they play Dallas this weekend). It’s the team that has bullied his new team for a long time. It’s the team his homecoming storyline expects him to beat consistently.

Maybe it’s too early to start thinking about upsets given Pittsburgh’s dominant run so far, but it’s clear where Burrow’s mind is.

And he’ll have to do it on a bigger stage than expected, as the NFL flexed the Bengals-Steelers showdown to a later time, too.
