Joe Brolly tweet backfires as Jackie Tyrrell highlights his exit from RTE

Jackie Tyrrell has hit back at Joe Brolly after the former Derry player cracked a joke about the suit the ex-hurling star wore on RTE's coverage of Kilkenny v Clare on Sunday.

Tyrrell watched his native county book their place in the All-Ireland final with a 1-25 to 1-22 victory over Clare at Croke Park to advance to this month's decider, which sees them face four-in-a-row chasing Limerick in another massive showdown.

But ahead of Sunday's game, Brolly took to social media to joke that the 41-year-old might have been slightly overdressed for the occasion.

He wrote: "Fair play to Jackie Tyrell dropping into the Sunday Game studio on the way to his wedding."

Responding to the tweet later in the evening, Tyrrell highlighted Brolly's departure from RTE by writing: "Only keeping your seat warm for you Joe. Oh wait …."

Brolly's departure from RTE came after the 2019 All-Ireland final, with the outspoken pundit later saying he was "shocked" by the decision, which he described as 'cruel'.

He said: “I loved every minute of the Sunday Game, to be palling about with the greats of Gaelic football, and to have the red carpet into Croke Park of a Sunday, and to be part of the national conversation.

“I was there for 20 years and, genuinely, I loved it and the fun we had. For it to end so abruptly, and, I thought, cruelly, I have to say.

“I’m a big boy and I’m freelance, but, I have to say, I was shocked.”

Brolly also claimed that things had become "controlled and scripted" around big games on RTE, adding that pundits would be told "don't say that and don't say this".
