Joe Brolly reacts to BBC increasing its coverage of GAA Championship from 2023

There's been much debate over how good, bad or indifferent the GAA's new media rights deal will prove for the association and its fans over the next five years.

The landscape will certainly be different as Sky have left the market entirely, having been a significant player since 2014.

Presumably, some or all of their 14 annual games will now find themselves on streaming platform GAAGO.

While RTE's quota has remained the same in terms of live Championship games at 31, the national broadcaster announced that it will be creating a second highlights show to go along with its nighttime edition of The Sunday Game.

There was even mention of 'digital in-game and post-match digital highlight clip rights' becoming more widely available.

And one more eye-catching detail was that not only will the BBC continue to showcase the Ulster Football Championship, but they will also be screening the All-Ireland semi-finals and finals on its global network.

It remains to be seen just what outlet these showpiece games will be viewed on, whether it be BBC Two, BBC Three or via the BBCiPlayer but the prospect of a football or hurling final being seen by a more global audience than ever before is a tantilising one.

There's plenty of excitement around this development and the BBC's continuing relationship with Gaelic Games in general as it will provide ex-pats living in the UK with a reliable, free way to watch the business end of the inter-county season.

Evidently, among those pleased by the development is former RTE pundit Joe Brolly.

He tweeted the above with followers similarly happy to see the latter stages of both Ulster and the All-Ireland series guaranteed on free-to-air television outside of the Republic of Ireland.
