Joe Brolly claims GAA inter-county season is on 'borrowed time'

Despite expressing his delight that the inter-county season is back, Joe Brolly worries that the GAA are on 'borrowed time'.

The GAA prematurely ended their club season earlier this month due to Covid-19, but have pressed ahead with the inter-county campaign.

With National Football League action resuming yesterday, Derry pundit Brolly described the impact the club return in August had on local communities.

And as he claimed that this weekend's return will help people 'feel connected' again, he feels that it might be short lived.

"The key is to try and find the balance, of course the GAA will follow the science," he told Eir Sport.

"We were thrilled to get the club championships. They made such an enormous difference, to the older people particularly, in the community. Obviously we had the unfortunate, but inevitable, euphoria at the end of those club championships.

"People were gathering together who may not have seen each other in a long time, they weren't even able to go to the games because there were no spectators at that time. The GAA had no alternative then.

"This is a slightly different thing. I think we are probably on borrowed time, but it's terrific that we're playing the game.

"It's a very important social outlet for people at home watching the game, being able to see the games, able to feel connected again, that there's something in society that inspires them and enlivens them again."

The former RTE pundit was on hand for Eir Sport's coverage of Dublin's clash with Meath in Parnell Park last night.

Dessie Farrell's Dubs edged the Royals in their return, with talisman Dean Rock firing 1-8 to become the county's all-time top scorer.
