Joe Biden will be invited to visit Ireland if he wins US Presidential election

Joe Biden will be invited to visit Ireland by the Government if he wins the US Election.

Minister for Finance, Paschal Donohoe, said there is an open invite for the new President after the results are finalised.

And Green Minister for Tourism, Catherine Martin, revealed the Government’s secret preference for Mr Biden in the White House again, with a veiled dig against Donald Trump.

Ms Martin said we should “respect democracy,” which could be seen as a criticism of Mr Trump’s threats not to respect the democratic vote if he loses the presidency.

She also said Mr Biden would bring “a refreshing tone” that has been 'missing' from the office of President, which suggests she was not happy with Mr Trump.

Ms Martin was asked by the Irish Mirror if a second Trump presidency would be bad for Ireland, considering his repeated anti-EU rhetoric.

She replied: “I think the most important thing is that we respect democracy and we’ll see how things pan out.

“It’s been a very exciting few days.

“My own 11-year-old came bounding down the stairs today and turned on CNN - he’s absolutely addicted to it.

“What I would say is that I do welcome….. I find it really refreshing the tone that Joe Biden is striking in his speeches this week.

“It’s something that I think has been missing on the international stage and I welcome that tone of unity that I feel is so badly needed at the minute.”

Mr Donohoe said he 'concurred' with his Green ministerial colleague, adding that “words matter in politics.”

The senior Fine Gael minister was asked by the Mirror if a Joe Biden White House would be good for Ireland and if an invite to visit would be issued by the Government.

He said: “There is always an invitation open from the Government of Ireland to the President of America.

“And as Minister Martin has said, let every vote be counted and then the Irish Government will then work with the new President.

“But I just want to concur with what the minister said, words matter in politics.”
