Joe Biden ‘trips and falls’ at graduation ceremony as staff race over to his aid

US President Joe Biden fell after appearing to trip during a public engagement.

Mr Biden tripped over a sandbag on stage after congratulating the last of the graduating Air Force Academy cadets.

Staff that were present at the event rushed to his aid but he got up and walked away himself, pointing at the sandbag. The White House has said he is well and was not injured.

The director of communications for the White House, Ben LaBolt, has said in a tweet: "He's fine. There was a sandbag on stage while he was shaking hands."

The stunt came as the president was wrapping up his commencement address, which he delivered to graduates at the Air Force Academy.

In his speech, Biden cautioned the graduating class about the daunting challenges posed by Russia and China as they embark on their respective paths of service.

Mr Biden, who is currently running for re-election in 2024, underwent a comprehensive physical examination in February, which determined that he is in good health and fully capable of fulfilling his duties, per the White House.

At the age of 81, Mr Biden is the oldest-ever US President. After announcing that he will run for the presidency in the 2024 elections, he addressed concerns about his age, stating that his age doesn't bother him and he feels good.

Biden mentioned that he had considered his age before deciding to run for re-election and pointed out that his polling data shows a favourable rating, according to ABC News.

“I can’t even say I guess how old I am, I can’t even say the number. It doesn’t— it doesn't register with me," Mr Biden said. “I took a hard look at it before I decided to run. And I feel good.

"With regard to age, you know, and polling data — I noticed the polling data I keep hearing about is that I’m between 42 and 46% favorable rating," Biden said. "Everybody running for re-election in this time has been in the same position. There’s nothing new about that."

Last June, Joe Biden had a bike accident in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, where he fell off his bike while greeting supporters. At the time, he appeared unhurt and explained that his foot got caught in the pedal.

After the incident, he chatted with onlookers before continuing his bike ride with First Lady Jill Biden.

The White House had then confirmed that Biden did not need medical attention and later, when asked about his condition, Biden playfully hopped before entering his vehicle.
