Joe Biden slams Trump for his handling of coronavirus response in new ad

Former Vice President Joe Biden slammed President Donald Trump Saturday over his failure to contain the coronavirus crisis in a new digital ad.

The Democratic presidential front-runner detailed Trump's statements downplaying the severity of the crisis even as the pandemic spread across the globe.

"Donald Trump has failed the American people," Biden wrote on Twitter.

Trump says he has done a "tremendous" job mobilizing the nation in the face of a crisis that no one could have seen coming.

But Biden and a chorus of critics say he ignored warnings and stoked doubts about the severity of coronavirus until it was far too late.

The ad comes as a new Washington Post report says Trump was given intelligence reports as early as January saying that the pandemic would hit the U.S.

The president denied the reports and lashed out at the Post, without specifically denying the details of the report.

Trump briefly mentioned Biden in his news conference Saturday, rebuffing what he claimed was unfair criticism by "Sleepy Joe" of Trump's ban on travel from China.

Biden has maintained somewhat of a lower political profile this week as the coronavirus crisis has transfixed America.

He has all but wrapped up the Democratic nomination after crushing progressive rival Bernie Sanders in a string of big-state primaries last Tuesday. Sanders has so far resisted calls to drop out but has mostly refrained from criticizing Biden.
