Moment Joe Biden found out he had won election captured in emotional family picture

Joe Biden found out that he was going to be the next President of the United States from his grandchildren, US media reports.

Earlier today Naomi Biden shared a candid photo of the Biden family on the day her granddad Joe was projected as the winner of the bitter battle with Donald Trump.

The shot, shared on Twitter in the style of a Polaroid, was simply captioned with today's date.

It was shared online by Naomi Biden, and shows the family hugging, as Mr Biden, who is set to become the 46th President of the United States, simply looking at the camera with a smile.

In what appears to be a natural and un-staged shot, at least five family members are seen trying to get in on the embrace.

JOE BIDEN'S GRANDDAUGHTERS SAY THE LOVELIEST THINGS ABOUT HIM!

CNN reports that President-elect Biden spent the majority of his time at home today with his family – taking in the moment they’ve worked for together for years.

They say it was his grandchildren who were the ones who informed him that the race was called in his favour, according a source on the campaign.

The tweeted image was liked more than 114,000 times in the first hour since it was uploaded.

Mr Biden was declared as winner of the election by news agencies around the world shortly after 4pm GMT.

The Democrat went over the magic 270 electoral college votes as Pennsylvania was called in his favour.

Celebrations broke out across America, with people seen dancing in the streets outside the White House, in Philadelphia and in apartment blocks across Manhattan, as Mr Biden was declared the winner.

Biden's route to victory was by flipping back the 'rust belt' industrial states of Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania which Trump won by slim margins in 2016.

It means his running mate, Kamala Harris will be both the first woman and person of colour to be elected Vice President.

Joe Biden gave a victory speech at roughly 1am UK time.

Meanwhile Donald Trump has continued his furious, fact-lite tirade in his first tweet since his election loss was sealed.

Shortly before 10pm GMT in an all-caps tweet he repeated unfounded claims of election fraud and wrongly claimed he had won the US Presidential election.
