Joe Biden promises to be president for 'all Americans' as he wins US election

Joe Biden has broken his silence and promised to be a "President for all Americans" in his first public statement since becoming the US President-elect.

Mr Biden wrote on Twitter:

"America, I’m honored that you have chosen me to lead our great country.

"The work ahead of us will be hard, but I promise you this: I will be a President for all Americans — whether you voted for me or not.

"I will keep the faith that you have placed in me."

Kamala Harris, soon to be the first woman and person of colour to serve as Vice President of the USA, has also tweeted following her victory.

"This election is about so much more than Joe Biden or me," she wrote.

"It’s about the soul of America and our willingness to fight for it.

"We have a lot of work ahead of us. Let’s get started."

But a sulking Donald Trump has refused to admit defeat, claiming the election is "far from over" and repeated his baseless claims about voter fraud.

Trump's lawyers were poised to hold a press conference outside a landscape gardening firm and it was expected the President's team would again repeat the unfounded allegations.

Trump has released a statement claiming that the “election is far from over.”

“Beginning Monday, our campaign will start prosecuting our case in court to ensure election laws are fully upheld and the rightful winner is seated.,” he wrote.

He went on to claim that Biden and “his media allies” have declared the election so the truth was not “exposed”.

Traditionally, the loser of the US election concedes to their opponent - usually with a gracious speech.

It's now very unlikely that we'll see such a magnanimous act from Trump.
