Joe Biden projected to be the next President of the United States

Joe Biden is projected to be the next President of the United States, according to an influential forecaster.

Decision Desk HQ made the call after Mr Biden took the lead in key swing state Pennsylvania.

It has been a close race for the keys to the White House, but the latest projections suggest Democrat Joe Biden will become the 46th President of the United States.

Mr Biden narrowly overtook President Donald Trump in the vote counts in Georgia and Pennsylvania, with the presidency hinging on the outcome of tight contests in key battleground states.

Neither candidate has yet definitely reached the 270 Electoral College votes needed to win the White House, though Mr Biden has the advantage after beating Mr Trump in Wisconsin and Michigan, two crucial Midwestern battleground states.

A tweet shared to Decision Desk's official Twitter page reads: "Decision Desk HQ projects that @JoeBiden has won Pennsylvania and its 20 electoral college votes for a total of 273.

It could still take several more days for the vote count to conclude in some states, which will allow for a clear winner to be confirmed.

President Donald Trump has called for counting to stop - and if that were the case he would now be declared the loser in any event. This has been the case for much of the time he has been making those calls, as well as without any evidence making claims of fraud against him.

The election took place against a backdrop of the coronavirus pandemic, which has left more than 230,000 Americans dead.

PA reports Mr Biden has already received more than 73 million votes nationally - the most in history.
