Joe Biden picks Kamala Harris as running mate

Joe Biden picks Kamala Harris as running mate [Daylife]

Joe Biden, the US Democratic party's presumptive presidential candidate, has chosen Senator Kamala Harris to be his vice-presidential running mate ahead of the elections in November.

She's the first woman of colour to be selected for a major party ticket.

The former California attorney general has used her experience as a prosecutor to pick apart arguments from the current administration in Senate hearings.

But: "During her tenure as attorney general, there were a lot of questions raised about her willingness to intervene in a variety of types of cases, including police excessive use of force allegations, as well as areas around drug policy that could really become a problem for her," says John Hudak of the Brookings Institution.

Harris is seen as a safe pick in spite of having clashed with Biden in democratic presidential candidate debates, and Biden says he holds no grudges.

President Trump said he was surprised at Biden's choice.

"As far as Kamala is concerned, she's a big tax raiser," Trump said. "She's a big slasher of funds for our military. And she's got a lot of difficult things that she's going to have to explain."
