Joe Biden looks to Glasgow COP26 conference with climate change appointment

Joe Biden has appointed the Unites States' first ever climate envoy ahead of the COP26 conference in Scotland next year.

The president-elect has handed the environment brief to Democratic veteran John Kerry just weeks after his election victory over Donald Trump.

World leaders are expected at the SEC in Glasgow for the United Nations climate change conference in November 2021.

And Kerry wasted no time in announcing his intention to make the Clydeside event a turning point in the global battle response to the climate crisis.

In a speech last night, he said the Paris climate agreement on its own will not be enough to stop global warming in its tracks.

"You're right to rejoin Paris on day one," he said of Biden. "You're right to recognise that Paris alone is not enough.

"At the global meeting in Glasgow one year from now, all nations must raise ambition together or we will all fail together. Failure is not an option.

"Succeeding together means tapping into the best of American ingenuity, creativity and diplomacy.

"From brain power to alternative energy power, using every tool we have to get where we have to go."

The Record reported earlier this month how Glasgow is ready to welcome  Joe Biden  to the city for next year's  COP26 conference.

The leader of  Glasgow City Council  has said the president-elect should "bring a waterproof" in preparation for the unpredictable autumnal Scottish weather.

COP26 was originally meant to take place this month but  was delayed  by a year due to the global coronavirus pandemic.

The UK Government is the official host of the event and Boris Johnson is expected to play a prominent role.

But the prospect of a new president heading to Glasgow has sparked excitement within the City Chambers.

Reacting to Biden's election triumph on Twitter, council leader Susan Aitken  said  she was "looking forward" to welcoming Joe Biden to Glasgow in a year's time, and joked he should "bring a waterproof".

She later told the Record the result had only raised anticipation in the city as it prepares to host COP26.

“I think everyone heard both the president and vice president elect put science and climate change firmly at the forefront of their policy agenda when they spoke in the early hours of Sunday morning," she said.
