Joe Biden will be sworn in as the next US President during an inauguration ceremony taking place later today.
The 78-year-old Democrat secured victory against Donald Trump in a bitterly-fought election held in the States in November last year.
He will now take the oath of office in Washington without his competitor watching on, as Trump becomes fourth president ever to boycott his successor’s inauguration.
Outgoing president Trump has repeated a number of baseless claims of election fraud following his defeat.
The claims that the election was ‘stolen’ from Trump helped to incite violent scenes at the Capitol earlier this month, as protestors stormed Government buildings.
Thousands of National Guard troops have been called to secure the area ahead of Mr Biden’s inauguration Wednesday.
Previous inaugurations have seen large crowds gather to watch the President being sworn into office - but mass gatherings are off the cards this year as the coronavirus crisis rages on in the US.

Scots will be able to watch the event from a number of channels today.
BBC One Scotland, the BBC News channel and Sky News will kick off their special programmes from 4pm this afternoon.
STV will also have coverage of the event that kicks off at 3.30pm.
The ceremony will begin at 4.30pm (GMT) with the national anthem before Kamala Harris is expected to be sworn in as Vice President.
Joe Biden will then be sworn in as US President at around 5pm.
