Joe Biden 'breaches royal protocol' with Queen for second time by revealing Putin chat

President Joe Biden may have breached Royal protocol for a second time after revealing what the Queen asked him about when he visited her at Windsor.

The US leader and his wife Jill had a chat with the 95-year-old monarch over tea at Windsor Castle on Sunday evening.

The couple had attended the G7 summit in Cornwall beforehand.

Mr Biden said they talked about a range of topics and the Queen asked him about his relationship with Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin - the leaders of China and Russia.

The president told reporters: "She wanted to know what the two leaders that I - the one I'm about to meet with, Mr Putin, and she wanted to know about Xi Jinping."

It is very rare for anyone to disclose what is said during conversations with the Queen and it appears to be the second royal gaffe he has made.

Earlier the US President appeared to break royal protocol as his motorcade swept into a G7 dinner reception after the Queen.

The POTUS's 18-car convoy arrived at the Eden Project five minutes after the monarch got there with Prince William and Kate, and Prince Charles and Camilla.

All guests are traditionally meant to be in place before HM arrives for any official occasion.

It didn't appear to put a dampener on the meeting, however, with the Queen all smiles as she spoke with Mr Biden.

Mr Biden's comments on Sunday came as he is due to have a showdown meeting with Mr Putin next week as part of his European tour.

The president had earlier drummed home the importance of the meeting with Mr Putin to G7 leaders on Sunday.

He described the current relationship between them as at a historically “low point."

He told reporters: “I think the best way to deal with this is for he and I to meet."

Biden was also here before heading off to Brussels to convene with NATO leaders to discuss the security challenges posed by Russia and China.

After that Mr Biden is expected to meet with Russian ruler Mr Putin in Geneva for talks on Wednesday.

It comes after former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger recently warned that the West risks becoming embroiled in a new Cold War.

Mr Biden was the 13th American leader to meet the monarch, with Lyndon B Johnson the only one the Queen has not met.

Her tea with the US President also came the day after the Queen received her official birthday gift from the the armed forces - a ceremony in her honour - which was held at the castle.

The traditional Trooping the Colour ceremony, which is normally staged in London, was ruled out for the second successive year because of the threat of coronavirus.
