Joe Biden announces record $383 million raised in September for presidential election campaign

Joe Biden has raised $383 million (£294 million) for his presidential election campaign in September.

The record-breaking sum eclipses the unprecedented fundraising sum of $364 million (£280 million) that was raised in August.

Mr Biden raised the record sum with the Democratic National Committee (DNC).

The haul leaves him with $432 million (£333 million) in the bank just weeks before the November 3 election.

In the tweet announcing his September haul, Mr Biden shared a video of him sharing the news on a phone call one of his grassroot supporters, Trimicka.

He said: "I wanted you to know, do you know how much money we raised in the month of September? $380 million - that's more than I've ever raised in my whole life."

Mr Biden added: "5.5 million donors like you, I'm really humbled by it."

The presidential candidate told Trimicka the average contribution in September was around $44.

During the Democratic primary, Mr Biden struggled to raise cash and was almost broke by the time he won the South Carolina primary, which catapulted him to a commanding Super Tuesday performance.

In the months since, a flood of donations and low spending has enabled him to eclipse Donald Trump’s once-formidable cash reserves.

The Trump campaign has not yet released their September fundraising numbers.
