Joe Biden adopts rescue dog named Major

Former US vice president Joe Biden has a new addition to his family, having adopted a rescue dog named Major.

The German shepherd was one of six puppies exposed to something toxic in their home leading to the owner surrendering them after being unable to afford vestiary care, according to the Delaware Humane Association (DHA).

The animal shelter worked with a local veterinary emergency centre to provide care for the dogs.

Having heard the story, Mr Biden got in touch with the association and fostered Major before eventually adopting him. All six of the dogs were found new homes.

Major joins the other Biden German shepherd Champ. While he was in office Mr Biden would hand out toy versions of Champ to children while making appearances.

“We are so happy to welcome Major to the Biden family, and we are grateful to the Delaware Humane Association for their work in finding forever homes for Major and countless other animals,” read a statement from the Bidens, signed the former vice president, his wife, Jill Biden, and Champ.

The DHA said it was an "honour" that one of their animals has found a home with the Bidens.

“It was such an honor for us to adopt a puppy to Vice President Joe Biden and Dr Jill Biden,” Delaware Humane Society executive director Patrick Carroll said.

“We make friends for life at DHA and we know that the bond between humans and their pets is incredibly strong. We have adopted thousands of animals into homes in Delaware, and we are happy to add the Vice President and his family to our list,” he added.
