Joe Banner on whether the Eagles’ current roster is better than 2004 Super Bowl team

Joe Banner has been around the Philadelphia Eagles for a long time as a former president of the team and now as an analyst for the NFL. While doing his weekly Q& A with The Inquirer’s NFL writer Paul Domowitch, Banner was asked about the current Eagles roster, and how it stacks up to the Donovan McNabb Eagles that made it to the Super Bowl against the Patriots in 2004.

“Without trying to sound dramatic, other than the possibility of 2004, I don’t think the Eagles have had a roster like this for as long as I can remember. It’s just an exceptional roster with great depth. And its strengths are in the most important places you want strengths to be. Quarterback, both lines. That’s where it starts. That’s the foundation of building a championship team.”

“People finally seem to be waking up about them. For the longest time, the Eagles weren’t getting a lot of pundit picks for the Super Bowl. But then everybody started looking closer at them and said, ‘Wait a minute, who can beat them?’ That’s where I’m at. I just think it’s an exceptional roster.”

Banner went on to say that health was the only thing that could derail this current team and that DeSean Jackson’s ability to stretch the defense will provide a dynamic for Philly that a lot of teams won’t be prepared for.
