Joe Aribo transfer saw Rangers 'short changed' as Southampton move compared to Bassey exit

Joe Aribo's move to Southampton was "more of a shock" than Calvin Bassey 's Ajax deal, according to Simon Ferry.

The duo both departed Rangers earlier this summer after impressing in their light blue jersey's last season to help Gio van Bronckhorst 's side reach the Europa League Final. Their form sparked the interest from a number of clubs before Aribo made the move to Southampton with Calvin Bassey trading Glasgow for Amsterdam.

Aribo, who only had 12 months left on his contract at Ibrox left, was sold to the Premier League side for an initial fee of £6million, though this could rise to £10million if certain add-ons are met during his stay at St Mary's. But the deal was worth considerably less than Bassey's, who joined Ajax for an initial £19.6million that could rise to £22.7million with add-ons. Rangers also have a reported 10 per cent sell-on fee for Bassey, something that was not negotiated into Aribo’s contract.

And the differences between the two deals was a surprise to former midfielder Ferry. "Joe Aribo's £6m fee was more of a shock [than Calvin Bassey's] for me,” he said via Grosvenor Sport . “He can run box-to-box, he's strong, can tackle and also score and create goals.

“But maybe, because he wasn't as effective in the last three months of his Rangers career as he was in the first six months of the season, the price tag came down a little bit.

He added: "Based on his quality alone I'd have been wanting a bit more than £6m but what Scottish clubs don't want is players running down their contracts and going for free so if there is a hint that Aribo is looking for a move away, it's so important that clubs do get a bit of money for them.”
